Karlie Kloss, Taylor Swift and Donald Trump react to de la Renta’s death – USA TODAY
Anyone who met Oscar de la Renta could attest to his genteel, elegant and courtly presence.
We attended his fragrance launch back in 2013 in his 42nd Street atelier. Amid ensembles worthy of any A-lister, de la Renta gave a short speech and mingled briefly among the select editors invited. Unlike other designers, who charm and glad-hand, de la Renta didn’t play that game. He thanked us for coming, told us to enjoy the Perrier-Jouët and left.
Wrote Karlie Kloss on Instagram: “The world lost one of the most extraordinary people that I have ever met. Thank you for helping me become the woman I am today and for always inspiring me to be better. There simply is no one else like you.”
Added her friend Taylor Swift, who wore de la Renta to the 2014 Met Ball: “My all-time favorite designer has passed away. Oscar, it was an honor to wear your creations and to know you. In loving memory.”
De la Renta was a gentleman who created timeless gowns, and mostly let those creations speak for themselves. And see the diverse tweets below to see just how many people he touched during his lifetime.
